The NCSCT have written, and are reviewing, series of factsheets that present the clinical case to support the delivery of stop smoking support in secondary care.
Smoking cessation interventions have proven to be effective for hospitalised patients. There is strong evidence in terms of the short and long-term benefits of stopping smoking on health and hospital outcomes. For these reasons, the NHS Long Term Plan has committed that all people admitted to hospital who smoke will be offered NHS-funded tobacco treatment services by 2023-24.
The NCSCT secondary care factsheets summarise the relationship between cigarette smoking and specific diseases or conditions and the clinical benefits of quitting. They also cover what we known about intervening with these patient groups in the hospital setting, including the use of stop smoking medications and referral to specialist stop smoking support.
Developed to support NHS leadership and staff with delivering high quality tobacco dependence treatment to patients hospitalised in both acute trusts, and in mental health trusts. These resources are available as tools to support good clinical practice.
On behalf of NHS England (NHSE) we are pleased to host a comprehensive suite of training resources to support the training of Tobacco Dependence Advisors (TDAs) who work with patients hospitalised in acute trusts.
The materials provide trainers with high-quality, evidence-based training resources to support local training delivery. The resources have been developed by national experts and covers the NHS-NCSCT core competencies for TDAs.
These training resources are designed for delivery by in-house trainers. They can also be delivered by external training organisations and the NCSCT can be commissioned to deliver this training on your behalf. To learn more about commissioning a training course from the NCSCT, see the Virtual training page in the TRAINING RESOURCES section of this website, or contact NCSCT Training Coordinator Tom Coleman-Haynes tom@ncsct.co.uk to discuss your training needs.
