Cut Down to Stop (CDTS) is becoming a first-choice treatment option for smoking cessation within local stop smoking services, especially for those people more dependent upon smoking and/or facing multiple challenges when quitting.
This page hosts a number of CDTS resources to support local stop smoking service leads and commissioners, managers, practitioners and clients.
CDTS briefing
This briefing includes information about the CDTS evidence base, role of CDTS within stop smoking services, key recommendations for implementation, quality standards and performance management measures.
CDTS Treatment Programme
The CDTS treatment programme provides guidance on how to support people who do not feel able to stop smoking abruptly, but who are willing to engage with a programme to gradually reduce and then stop smoking completely.
CDTS client workbook
The CDTS treatment programme describes how to use this CDTS smoking client resource. This resource was developed by colleagues at the University of York as part of the Smoking Cessation Intervention for People with Severe Mental Ill Health (SCIMITAR+) Trial and has been adapted with their kind permission.
We recommend using a printed version during consultations so that both you and the client can make notes and add information directly to the plan. The document is flexible: it can be printed in its entirety or as individual pages for use in specific sessions.
CDTS training
It is recommended that practitioners receive training and support to deliver CDTS interventions as outlined in the NCSCT Competency framework for stop smoking practitioners.
The NCSCT in partnership with Breathe, a collaboration of fifteen local authorities across Humber and North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire NHS Integrated Care Boards, has developed a suite of advanced practice training for tobacco leads/commissioners, service managers and stop smoking practitioners on maximising the impact of stop smoking services and targeting and tailoring tobacco dependence treatment for people who smoke, particularly people in priority groups.
These courses include training on CDTS interventions and are available to commission now. Please contact enquiries@ncsct.co.uk for more information.
This briefing offers essential advice on the safe use of oxygen in the home, focusing on the dangers associated with cigarettes and to a lesser extent nicotine vapes, and offering practical strategies to minimise risk.
